How to Use These Courses

Course Structure

The main body of this course comprises lessons and topics. In addition, this course includes the sections How to Use This Course, Skills Assessment, and a Glossary. The course structure is illustrated below:

To open a lesson introduction or topic, click on that title in the Table of Contents. Each topic title includes a link to a practice exercise that allows you to perform a procedure as though you were using the actual application you are learning about. For example, a course about Microsoft Excel might enable you to practice creating a chart from a range of data on a worksheet. The exercise would let you work in an environment that looks and behaves like Excel but that would not actually be Excel. In fact, you would not need to have Excel on your computer to make it work.

How you move through this content depends on how you have your content viewer configured. The content viewer is what you use to see the Table of Contents and to search the content. The content viewer also typically will include a Help section where you can learn more about how to use the viewer.

Skills Assessment

Each course offers a series of questions, known as a Skills Assessment, to help you identify the lessons in the course that might require additional attention. To get the full benefit of this training, however, it is suggested that you go through the entire course.

You access the Skills Assessment by clicking the Skills Assessment node in the Table of Contents and then clicking the Take the Skills Assessment link on the Skills Assessment page.

After you finish answering the questions, click the Show My Score button at the bottom of the assessment page. You will get your score as well as a table suggesting specific lessons to focus on in the course. You can also compare your answers to the correct answers, which are highlighted for you.

You can print a copy of your results for future reference by clicking the Print button at the bottom of the page. You can also save a copy of your assessment to the desktop.

Lesson Introductions

Each lesson starts with a Lesson Introduction, which:

  • Briefly introduces the topic of the lesson.
  • Presents the learning objectives covered in the lesson.
  • Offers a time estimate for the completion of the lesson.
  • In some cases, includes ancillary information.

You access a Lesson Introduction by clicking the name of the corresponding lesson in the Table of Contents under the course name. In the Table of Contents, the lessons are positioned below the How to Use this Product and Assessment nodes, and above the Glossary node.

Topics

Each lesson is made up of a number of topics. Topics cover specific procedures and always feature a practice exercise. Each topic:

  • Briefly introduces the focus of the exercise.
  • Provides a scenario to keep in mind as you perform the exercise steps.
  • Presents the learning objectives covered in the exercise.
  • Offers a time estimate for the completion of the exercise.
  • Includes a link to click to start performing the task and associated steps in a simulated environment.
  • Supplies additional information on the feature or task being covered in the exercise.

You can view the additional information for each topic by clicking the Read More link at the bottom of a topic page. This link "opens" the page so that you can see the text and graphics that tell you more about the topic being covered. To hide this information, click the Read More link again.

You access a topic by clicking the name of the corresponding topic in the Table of Contents under the associated lesson. In the Table of Contents, topics are positioned below the Lesson nodes.

Exercises

Exercises are launched from the topics pages and open in separate Internet Explorer windows. Each exercise is made up of a number of steps that are performed or viewed in a simulation area. The steps are presented on the right side of the window, while the simulation area is located on the left side. Each exercise:

  • Enables you to either perform the steps presented in the list in a simulated environment or watch the steps being performed by clicking the Show Me link located at the top of the step list pane.
  • Allows you to alternate between the Practice mode and the Show Me mode.
  • Lets you repeat steps as well as skip steps.
  • Enables you to navigate through the step list and return to the beginning or reach the end of the step list at any time.

After you complete the exercise, you simply click the Close button in the upper-right corner of the window to close the Exercise window and return to the topic page.

Glossary

Each course offers a series of definitions in the Glossary. These definitions provide descriptions of words and terms used throughout the course.
