Bullying Overview
The Bully Prevention/Family Matters strand offers support to educators
who are struggling with aggressive or disruptive behaviors among students.
Intervention strategies and support tools are designed for teachers of grades
K-12. Other components in this strand include Anger Management, Self Esteem,
Temper Tantrums, and Test Taking Strategies.
Session 1: Bullying Overview
This session focuses on the most common complaints about bullying. The
presenter will explore methods used by bullies, including teasing,
isolation, rumors and physical violence.
Session 2: Targets of Bullying
This session focuses on characteristics that may make a child more
likely to be a target of bullying and how being bullied effects the
target. Educators will look at the characteristics that identify
bullying from typical childhood play. Included are suggestions for adult
intervention and tools for the target to use in bullying situations.
Session 3: Cyber Bullying
Recently, a new form of bullying has emerged…cyber bullying. It is the
use of technology to cause harm to others. This session will explore the
facets of cyber bullying and offer practical strategies to counteract
it.
Session 4: Sugar & Spice But Not Always Nice
This session discusses some of the characteristics more prevalent in
girl bullying.
Sessions 5: Bullying Prevention
Participants will be provided a list of resources on countering the
effects of bullying. The discussion will also focus on school climate
and the educators’ role in setting a tone of tolerance and safety.
Session 6: Flirting or Harassment?
In this session participants will delve into the characteristics of a
healthy relationship and the do’s and do-nots of dealing with sexual
harassment.
Session 7: Self Esteem
Focus will be on self image and self esteem. Discussion includes tips to
develop confident learners with a tolerance and appreciation for
individual differences.
